Recycling Schedule for Sewaren
Ward Info: Ward no. 3
Trash: Tuesday & Friday
Recycling: Wednesday
8/7/03 - When school opens next
month, there will be a new parking lot in front of Matthew Jago
School in
Sewaren because of a joint project between the township and the school
district. The district contributed $26,765 for the project, which
included paving, materials, painting, parking blocks and base stone.
The township paid $16,062 for engineering, equipment and labor. "By
working together with the Board of Education, we were able to complete
this project," said Mayor Frank G. Pelzman. "In addition to the new
parking lot at (the Jago) School, Glen Cove Avenue will be safer and less
congested." The new employee lot has 30 regular spaces and three
handicapped spaces, and will improve the parking situation in front of the
school. The school had outgrown the old parking lot behind the
building. "This new lot will certainly solve the parking crunch,"
said Superintendent of Schools Vincent Smith. "More of our teachers
will have a place to park, and it will free up street parking for parents
who are dropping off and picking up their children."

- There was an accident on West Avenue around 5:25 p.m. that closed down
the road for about an hour. The accident involved an ambulance and a
car. It appears that the ambulance was on West Avenue going to an
emergency and a car on Woodbridge Avenu e
was crossing West Avenue. The car rammed into the side of the
ambulance, causing the ambulance to go out of control. The ambulance
at one point was on two wheels and if not for the tree at the side of the
road, it would have rolled over and caused damage to a home. There
are more photos in the Photographs section. If they decide to put
this in the newspaper I will include more details.

- The shored
of the Alvin P. Williams Memorial Park recently received a spruce up.
Inmates from the New Jersey Department of Corrections cleaned up several
yards of beach debris. It was funded by the "Shore to Please"
campaign, through the purchase of special license plates. "I
appreciate the cooperation of the Department of Correction in our efforts
to keep our shoreline clean," said Councilman Vincent Martino.

5/25/03 - Woodbridge Traffic Police
were repairing the traffic light that controls
West and
Woodbridge Avenues. The repair took a few hours to complete.

5/21/03 - West Avenue was closed off
yesterday from Woodbridge Avenue to the foot of the West Avenue bridge.
The closure was due to a down power line. The issue was resolved a
few hours later. Traffic wanting to go down West Avenue had to take
a detour through the residential area.
2/25/03 -
There will be a new business in Sewaren soon. The D'Aprile Family
Caterers (photo on left) will be going where PJ's Deli once was but they
do off premise catering so they will be only occupying the back of the
building and there is room for one more business in the front. We
will bring you more to come with the business that will be occupying the
building.
About 4 weeks into building a new home on
Woodbridge Avenue (photo on right), the whole structure is up in place
with windows attached and the shingles on the roof. The lot they
placed it on was subdivided to allow this two-story house to be here.
The structure is located near the corner of Woodbridge Avenue & Meade
Street.
2/21/03
- An explosion at a Mobil fuel storage complex in Staten Island made
Sewaren and other neighboring towns shake for miles. The smoke
stretched for about 94 miles. The barge was at the loading
dock of the Port
Mobil
fuel storage complex. It was unloading 4 million gallons
of unleaded gasoline when it exploded at about 10:10AM.
The elementary school, Matthew Jago, was evacuated and students were
brought to other schools in Woodbridge. There was a point where the water
was on fire from the gasoline; the blaze was contained by 2PM.

1/18/03 - Residents are starting to
recover from the biggest winter
storm since The Blizzard of 1996. The storm dumped 1 - 2 ft of snow
through out the area, with drifts from 3 - 5 ft. Photos are
now in the new 2003 photos section.
1/15/03 -
Residents
will soon be able to enjoy nature and stay plugged in at the same time.
Free wireless internet service will be available to laptop users at Alvin
P. Williams Park, starting in late summer. This was the brainchild
of Councilman Jim Carroll. "People will be able to work, surf the
net or e-mail in the quiet of open space," said Councilman Carroll.

1/26/03 - After 13 days of temperatures
below freezing Smith's Creek has been frozen. You will notice some
of the ice is cracked that is because of the high and low tides. The
images are below.
1/13/03 - The old F. A. Sollace Residence (see photos below) has been
abandoned for a few years and had back due taxes on the house.
The house was apparently bought at a sheriff's auction and was demolished
due to the lack of care and they are planning to put houses up on the lot.
We will keep you up to date on what happens further. Click
